During July 2018, we welcomed Ruairidh Ferguson to Four Square (Scotland) to gain some knowledge and experience in the work we do that supports vulnerable service users. Ruairidh is a student at the Queen Margaret University studying Public Sociology and had approached Four Square to take part in an internship during his summer break.

Ruairidh was able to work with our Springboard and Connected projects, Nick Hall, Springboard Coordinator said “Ruairidh showed a keen interest in the kind of work we do and asked a lot of insightful questions, particularly about the type of clients that we work with. Ruairidh demonstrated a very good understanding and sympathetic attitude to the issues faced by our clients and seemed keen to learn”.
Ruairidh met many of the service managers across the organisation and was able to visit some of the services including the EFI store at Sighthill, where he understood how the Edinburgh Furniture Initiative supports Four Square through its ability to receive donations of furniture and sell them on, this not only provides much needed furniture to people who need it but also cuts down on landfill and the impacts on the environment – find out more here https://www.foursquare.org.uk/efi-furniture-stores/
Our residential services deliver much needed accommodation support for vulnerable people affected by homelessness and Ruairidh was particularly interested to know more about the services we offer. Linda Mugadza, Residential Services Manager said “Ruairidh presented himself as pleasant, polite, interested and asked some pertinent questions about our Stopover, Number 20 and Training Flat services. In discussing background issues, he seemed keen to understand where people are coming from. I also had an interesting conversation with him about sociology and the need for a more humane approach which I thought was very insightful”.
Ruairidh also spent some time understanding about our EHAP and Visiting Support services as well as operational functions including Finance and HR.
Ruairidh concluded his internship with a presentation to Colin Hilditch, Business Manager and Jacqui Hardie, Social Care Manager at Four Square where he discussed his learnings and how he would reflect on this as part of his remaining studies. Ruairidh was presented with a certificate of achievement by Colin and Jacqui at the Four Square offices at Logie Green Road, Edinburgh. Colin Hilditch said “Ruairidh proved to be an effective and diligent intern and I was impressed by how hard he worked to understand the services that Four Square provides. This was appreciated by the full staff team and I hope will be of benefit to him in the future.”
Four Square (Scotland) would like to thank the colleagues who were able to spend time with Ruairidh and make his experience with us one of learning and understanding and wish Ruairidh every success in the future.
